My name is Rex Beech and I am Chair of Governors for Brentwood School and Community College. I was invited to join the Governing Body last October and was elected Chair at that time. The term of office is usually for four years, although an election of officers is held each year at the first governors meeting of the school year.
I was a little nervous at the start of my role because I had had no experience of working in a Special School. I need not have worried – my co-governors and all the staff have been most welcoming and have made a very easy path for me. The students are wonderful. I have got to know quite a few students and staff and I visit the school regularly on Thursday afternoon in Cherrywood Cafe – perhaps I may meet you there sometime!
I moved to the area as a Pottery specialist to teach at one of the local Grammar Schools in 1967. I married and my three children went to Wellfield Infant and Juniors Schools. I joined the Governors of Wellfield Infant School as a Parent Governor in 1982. I moved with my children to the Junior School and when they moved on I stayed and was co-opted as a Community Governor. I was elected Chair of Governors and worked closely with six different headteachers for more than I care to remember.
During my teaching career I retrained in Technology which I taught until my retirement in 2003. Since then I have worked for a local tree contractor designing and building structures for schools and parks in Trafford and Cheshire using the arisings from the tree business.
The role of governor has changed enormously over the years and has become a much more challenging one. I hope that we can contribute to the best provision for our students and ensure that they leave with the knowledge and skills to be the very best that they can be.
